Gottman, J. (1997).
Raising an emotionally
intelligent child.
Educators (including parents) can help children discern emotions
by providing labels for different feelings that the children might have.
This process of labeling emotions for children can also help in
the child’s development of empathy.
For example, if you notice a child is feeling down and you say,
“How are you feeling?,” a child should be able to give a label to the
sensation and cognitive interpretation.
